What is Hoopla?

Answer:

Hoopla is one of the two major digital libraries that RPL offers access to. Hoopla has items to checkout that include ebooks, audiobooks, comics, movies, TV shows, music, and "binge passes" - collections of magazines, puzzles, documentaries, and more that you check out as a whole.

Items in Hoopla are always available, so you never have to put items on hold or sit on a waitlist for a popular title. But, you can only check out a certain number of items each calendar month. Currently, RPL cardholders are allowed to check out 4 items each month. Once you hit that limit, you won't be able to check out any more items until the first of the month. Books, audiobooks, movies, music albums, and binge passes all count as one checkout per item; TV shows are checked out per episode rather than per season, so each episode costs one checkout.

Each item type has a different checkout period, as outlined below. Items will be returned automatically at the end of the loan period, but can also be returned early if you are finished. Note that returning an item early does not give you extra borrows

  • Movies and TV shows: 3 days
  • Music albums: 7 days
  • Ebooks, audiobooks, and comics: 21 days
  • Binge passes: 7 days

Hoopla has its own set of FAQs that you can access any time online. You can also start a chat with a librarian at RPL or give us a call if you are having any trouble with your account.

If you run out of borrows on Hoopla, check out our collections on Libby! There is no monthly borrow limit on Libby, but be aware that items may have a waitlist. Libby may also have titles that are not available on Hoopla.

You can access Hoopla by clicking here, or using the mobile app that is available on both Apple and Android devices. You will be asked to search for your library, enter your library card number and PIN, then sign up for an account with an email and password.
